Difference between adoption and foster parenting

Some people get confused with the foster care system and the adoption process. The main difference is that adoption is permanent and foster care is designed to be a temporary situation. The second difference is that in cases of adoption, you are now responsible as a parent as opposed to a guardian.

Once you start the process of adoption, the state will still share responsibilities until the adoption is final. Now the total care of the child belongs to you. When you are a foster parent, any decisions regarding schooling, medical care and any other important decisions about the child are made by the state but when you adopt it is as if the child was born to you biologically.

When you are a foster parent, the state sends you a check every month to help with the cost of clothes, food or school supplies. Once the adoption case is closed you are the sole financial responsibility of the child. However, on your tax forms you can use the adoption tax credits option located on your form.

Here are some tips when you are looking into adoption of a foster child. Talks to a lawyer, adoption laws are strict especially when the child began as a foster child first. Get everything from the state and your lawyer in writing, this is a difficult process and you want to be able to understand everything that is going on and sometimes reading it allows you to comprehend a little better.

Even though the child was placed in foster care you still have to consider the child’s biological family, they may not contest the adoption but be prepared if they do. Adoption is not an easy process; it is long and hard but keep going through with it. It will pay off in the end.
